King Tutankhamen The boy KingKing Tutankhamen ,or King Tut, was one of the novelest indexs to reign over any country. &8220The Boy King is best remembered for his magnificent funeral treasures, including his elaborate g experienceden burial mask. King Tut achieved a measure of immortality through his glittering burial treasures. King Tut was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty who reigned from nigh 1348 to 1339 BC. His name can be spelled a variety of ways including Tutankhamen, Tutankhamon, or Tutankhamun. There is an enigma, though, surrounding his name. Researchers have no idea where it came from because his parents are unknown. He became king during the period of readjustment that followed the death of his father-in-law, the pharaoh Akhenaton. The boy king married Akhenaton&8217s third daughter to strengthen his claim to the throne and took the name Tutankhaton meaning &8220 skillful of life is Aton. After less than three years of residence at Akhetaton he changed his na me to Tutankhamen. Because Tut was only nine or ten when he became pharaoh the pedagogy of the state was devolved onto an older official named Ay. ( He succeeded Tut when he died.)When Tut was alive, however the Egyptians had a flair for playing games and telling stories. All Egyptians enjoyed contests and stories, but the wealthy pursued those pastimes with an attractive flourish. Royalty such as Tut, was portrayed on the walls of his tomb playing the game senet, which reenacted the quest for eternal fulfillment after death. This game is played on a checkerboard table with thirty squares arranged in three parallel rows. Each of twain players has an equal number of counters (ranging from five to seven) in two series of different shapes. The counters are moved with sticks or small bones. The goal of the game is to get across the board with your counters following an S-shaped path while outrunning or blocking those of your adversary the game is won when you get all your counters o ff the board. The fifteenth square and the last five squares bear images or hieroglyphic inscriptions that annunciate a special status, either favorable or unfavorable, for the counter that lands on them. WHATS BEHIND THE ESCALATING TREND?AS we head into the new millennium, marrying mitt dating across cultural lines seem to be increasing at record rates.Almost anywhere you go these days, you will encounter mixed-race couples at the grocery store, the mall, the theater, at a company function, at a concert, even at church. And while for years the Black man-White woman couple was to a greater extent prevalent, today many social observers say that the pairing of Black women and White men is nevertheless as common.That certainly seems to be the case in cities such as St. Paul-Minneapolis, where interracial couples long have thrived. But the social trend also is sooner evident in other large cities such as Chicago and New York, Atlanta and Detroit, where there is a noticeable and striking increase in the number of mixed-race couples, especially Black women with White mates.In movies, on television and even on Broadway, the theme of interracial love has become en vogue. Wesley Snipes has starred in a number of movies in which his love interest was not Black jungle Fever, One Night Stand and U.S. Marshal. The popular sitcom accessory McBeal has the lead character bemoaning a lost love, a Black doctor. Last year, Whitney Houstons production of Cinderella starred Brandy in the title role but the prince was not Black. And a new Broadway musical, Marie Christine, revolves around a relationship in the 1800s between a Black woman (Audra McDonald) and a White sea captain."Interracial couples are more noticeable and prominent than ever," says a Midwest-based author who has observed the changes in social trends for some 40 years. "But the recent numbers of Black women being escorted by White men is, well, startling, to say the least."According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 1997 there were 311,000 interracial (Black-White) married couples, more than six times as many as in 1960. Of those, 201,000 were comprised of a Black husband and White wife, while there we re 110,000 couples in which the husband was White and the wife Black. Some estimate that today 10 percent of married Black men have mates of another race.Some social observers say that the increase in cross-cultural relationships is tied at one time to the breakdown of school and residential segregation and the 1967 overthrow of the last laws. That year the U.S. Supreme Court unconstitutional laws barring racial intermarriage in states.
